CSI: BS
(Cop-show propagandists claim such success at programing the jurors that their efforts may have somehow backfired slightly)
In the 7-06 issue of Scientific American (CSI: REALITY by Max Houck, www.sciam.com) the author explores a postulated "CSI Effect". Cops, judges and prosecutors complain that TV cop-shows are educating potential jurors too much, causing them to ask, "Where's the beef?:" The "beef" is physical evidence, of which most solemn, courtroom lawyer-dramas are severely lacking. Jurors are beginning to get very tired of the steady diet of mere fingerpointing, verbal accusations and swearing-to-the-truth that characterizes most trials. The solemn mystique of trials is wearing thin because there are so many entertainment-type judge-shows on TV now. And, jurors are noticing the lack of substance beneath the usual hearsay and he-said, she-said nonsense that characterizes most trials, masquerading as "real" evidence. Jurors sometimes want actual, real, scientific proof now, not just eyewitnesses swearing to what they thought they saw and heard. Some jurors are even realizing the incredible ease with which eyewitness testimony is often concocted and demanding physical evidence instead of excuses for why none made it into the courthouse. Cop/prosecutor excuses as to how the physical evidence got away have reached the limits of sophistication and now suffer incredulity. How can cops and prosecutors be so extremely Sherlock Holmes on collecting and displaying eyewitness "proof" and so Keystone Kops on actual physical proof? Jurors have finally begun to question the obvious lack of symmetry here. It may now be that the thousands of innocent persons found to have been fraudulently convicted are begining to trump the three or four famous guilty ones who got away. Maybe the knee-jerk, emotional, political reaction of "We need tougher laws to make sure no more famous guilty people escape justice!" is being superseded by the more logical response, "What if some of these thousands of fraudulently-convicted-for-decades innocent persons get to be me or my children?"
So now the cop/media alliance give us a "CSI Effect" to explain this lack of symmetry phenomenon they have. Despite massive efforts to keep the truth suppressed, people are figuring out that thousands of innocent persona convicted for decades are not all simple "mistakes" or "co-inkie-dinks"; cops and lawcrats rely on the most UN-reliable "evidence" in every trial (i.e. eyewitness testimony) because it is cheap, easy to get, easy to manipulate into the forms that virtually guarantee conviction and because it is easy for heavily programed, non-skeptical conformist minds to believe; when the FBI lab got busted for the second time for being the evidence-manufacturing plant it is, the federal govt "solved" its credibility problem by passing out billions of dollars to over 18,000 local police departments so that they could create and use their OWN evidence-manufacturing plants; the biggest and proudest and most modern of these new local coplabs (Houston, LA, Chicago, NY, NO, Dallas, Miami, Boston, Philly, Atlanta, Okie City, et al) quickly got busted for doing the EXACT SAME THING, proving that the supposed exception is, in fact, the rule. Cops and lawcrats are not the lily-white, cartoon-like superheros that our mass-media whores and politicians have incessantly told us they are, and; somebody we trust needs to keep an eye on these super-powerful, unsupervised beings who have made themselves immune to the law and force them to conform to some type of quality control! Everybody needs some feedback loops. When machines slip their feedback loops, the process goes haywire, quickly. When people manage to slip free of their feedback loops, they swiftly lose their humanity. This is exactly why a list of the most reviled professions have at the top the terms "lawyer" and "politician" This lack of feedback loops is why both these terms are synonymous with "sleazy".
